Coaching
I wonder what it is about most of us as entrepreneurs and business people that most of us resist the idea of a coach or a mentor. It probably has got to do with the fact that we are self-starters. We want to change our lives and be in control and we do not want to depend on anyone else. I suppose it is how we are thinking at that moment.
When my children were younger they were interested in the martial arts. They kept on asking if we could take them to lessons. My wife and I had no idea what martial art to choose. To be honest my wife went to the local sports centre and found the following available, Judo, Karate and Tae Kwondo.
She chose Tae Kwondo because she liked the kicking aspect of it. That was it. We happened to have chosen a class with a World Bronze medallist and a many time national champion. But that is another story.
Well the point here is that we did not just set up a class in our back garden. Watch a few videos and then say to the children we are ready to have Tae Kwondo classes. Every martial art has their uniform and code of conduct. It tells you how things are done, how you enter the practice arena, how you greet others and so on.
Make your choice
It is going to be the same for your internet and online marketing journey. You can’t just buy a set of tools or products throw them up on your website and expect it to work. In fact, 99.999% of the time it does not work.
Why, because you don’t know what you are doing? You have to find a system. Just because you are online does not mean you do not need to have a system. You need a system on how you are going to get traffic, generate leads from that traffic, make sales and then follow-up.
There are lots of products out there and lots of promises but most of those products or services are for people who are sophisticated buyers. I know a lot of the marketing says that a newbie will be able to make money or get traffic or generate leads. But in the majority of cases it is a lot more difficult than that. A lot more complicated than the offer suggests.
Don’t get me wrong, the products can and do work. It’s that they take effort.
Build your foundations
My children were amazed by the spinning and jumping kicks that the accomplished Tae Kwondo players could perform. Seeing such spectacular action motivated them. They had to start though like everyone else in learning the basic stances, blocks and punches.
You have to start your online business like everyone else, at the beginning. Seeing people making money encourages you. It is thrilling to think that you can also be doing the same.
What we don’t see is the amount of work that has proceeded this success. Once people see that they can often switch off and turn to another program. But you have to be honest and say ‘Why would you expect success to come to you without some effort and commitment in return?’
One of the great advantages though is that it does not have to take you years to become a master. If you scale properly and at the right time you can grow very quickly. But to do so you have to have the right systems and processes in place along with the commitment and effort.
This is why it is vital to have the right coach or mentor in the first place. Because you leverage all their experience and more importantly what works immediately into your business so that you don’t make the same mistakes they made.
You take your commitment and energy as your fuel and pour it into a know working system. You learn what works immediately, allowing you to grow exponentially once you have understood the basics and do the work.
The Basics
What are the basics you need to learn. I mentioned them earlier
- Traffic generation
- Lead conversion
- Sales
- Follow-up
You have to practice each of the basics. Now I am not going to go into the detail of every step here. But what I want to say is that to a new person to online marketing it is overwhelming when faced with all that needs to be done.
I know I have said it before but that is why I think affiliate marketing is a great place to start as it allows you to minimise the overwhelm as long as you find the right system and product.
My advice is to find a suitable program that takes care of the items 3 to 4 in the list. Leaving you to concentrate on how to generate traffic and lead generation.
By practicing traffic generation and lead conversion everyday you will become a master of the art and will be confident of being able to drive traffic to any of the programs that you are promoting and eventually to your own products (which is the ultimate goal).
The Importance of a coach
However, it is at this point that most people become overwhelmed and confused. Because instead of deciding to focus on one technique of traffic generation they become seduced by another offer, another method of traffic generation.
One day it is YouTube videos for traffic generation, the next it is blogging, the next day it is Pinterest and the day after pay per click or a few days later it is another free traffic generation method.
If they had a coach or a mentor they would have kept on the straight and narrow because their coach would have said to them. ‘Concentrate on what I am telling you to do. Do this!’
You have to be disciplined and stick to one method of traffic generation. It really doesn’t matter which one you choose but stick at it. Only by doing this will you be able to see the fruits of your labour.
But When Should I change?
You can add another method of traffic generation when you are making $10,000 or more per month from the one method. Once you have hit that figure you know that you have a very good understanding of the technique. But you must still keep working on your proven method, even though you are now on your second method.
